(2.1) Number of Competing Products Displayed

Number of Competing Products Displayed
In previous lessons on keywords, Eazyppc covered how to evaluate a keyword’s market through Search Volume and product seasonality. In this next lesson, Eazyppc will address another important factor: the competitiveness of the market for a given keyword.
Topic 1: Number of Competing Products Displayed
1/ What is the Number of Competing Products Displayed?
When you search for a keyword on Amazon, the system shows results like this:

This information line shows that Amazon is displaying the first 48 products out of over 60,000 products related to the keyword “collagen“. This means there are more than 60,000 products on Amazon.com that contain the keyword “collagen” in their title, description, or feature bullet points,…

2/ The ‘Road to’ Page 1
Analyzing the number of competing products displayed helps you assess the level of competition in a market. This is especially important for determining whether that market fits your business strategy.
For new Sellers, entering a highly competitive market can bring several challenges:
- Takes longer and requires higher costs
- Requires a large advertising budget
- In the early stages, you may need to accept low profit margins, break even, or even operate at a loss
-> To achieve organic ranking on page 1
Below is an illustrative example of the number of competing products in two different markets:

Although the keyword “collagen” has 5 times higher search volume than “astaxanthin” (a potent natural antioxidant), the number of competing products is also 100 times higher! This suggests that new Sellers may have a greater chance of success by choosing the “astaxanthin” market over “collagen”.
This is especially true for Sellers who need to maintain positive cash flow:
+ When Amazon holds your revenue and pays you on a rolling payout cycle
+ Or do not have large working capital
-> It is very important to carefully evaluate this factor.
To further analyze the level of competition, you can use the Magnet tool from Helium10 and enter the keyword into the ‘Analyze’ function:

Magnet IQ Score = Search Volume / Competing Products * 1000 (note: figures may have a small margin of error due to data updates from Helium10).
